Some second-cycle institution heads are advocating the elimination of certain freebies that came along with the establishment of the government's free senior high school program.
They think that doing so would relieve financial strain on the government, thereby giving it a way to redirect monies toward the provision of food.
Under the condition of anonymity, a head teacher told lagos local news that because the school is short of fruit and protein, his pupils aren't getting the proper nutrition.
He also thinks that parents should be given the opportunity to support the government in providing food for the students because they are willing and able to do so.
“Free uniforms should be canceled, free church service attire, breakfast and supper should be taken care of by parents, not the government. And we keep on drumming this, and I don’t understand this, because parents are capable of taking care of their children”.
“This thing has gone beyond politics. We are talking about Ghana, and as we speak, we don’t have a single tin of sardines in my school. I don’t remember the last time we gave them eggs and fruits,” a head teacher of a Senior High School who spoke on Eyewitness News monitored by Lagos Local News lamented.
In order to offer senior high school students free education, the Nana Akufo-Addo administration launched the Free SHS policy in September 2017.
Despite obvious problems with the program, the administration has repeatedly rebuffed requests for a review of the policy from civil society organizations and observers of the school sector.
